The country’s major oil marketing companies (OMCs)—Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL)—have released the latest retail prices of petrol and diesel for all districts of Uttarakhand at 6 am today. There is a slight difference in fuel prices in different districts of the state due to local VAT rates, transportation cost and geographical distance. Petrol remains around Rs 100 in the capital Dehradun and plains districts, while high altitude hill districts like Almora, Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi have recorded rates slightly higher due to added transportation costs.
Oil companies review fuel prices every morning based on the prices of crude oil in the international market. Due to narrow roads and long distances in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand, logistics costs are high, the effect of which is visible on the prices of retail pumps. The estimated average retail prices of petrol and diesel today in the plains and hilly areas of the state are as follows:

Dehradun: In the capital Dehradun, petrol is available at the price of around ₹ 100.81 per liter and diesel at around ₹ 95.05 per liter.

Almora: In Almora district of Kumaon division, the rate of petrol has been recorded at around ₹ 102.16 per liter and diesel at around ₹ 96.17 per litre.

Haridwar: Due to the plain area and proximity to the refinery route, petrol in Haridwar remains around ₹ 99.52 per liter and diesel around ₹ 95.04 per liter.

Nainital (Haldwani): In Nainital district, petrol is being sold at around ₹ 99.63 per liter and diesel at ₹ 95.58 per litre.

Udham Singh Nagar: In the Terai region, the price of petrol is around ₹99.95 per liter and diesel is around ₹95.84 per litre.

Chamoli and Rudraprayag: In the border districts of Garhwal, petrol is priced around ₹101.84 to ₹101.85 per liter and diesel around ₹96.94 to ₹96.97 per litre.

Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh: In remote border areas, petrol price is stable at ₹101.90 per liter and diesel around ₹97.02 to ₹97.04 per litre.
The main reason for the difference in fuel rates in different cities within Uttarakhand is logistics and freight charges. The main depots of Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum are located in the plains or near the state borders. From there, heavy oil tankers are transported through mountainous and inaccessible valleys to districts like Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli or Pithoragarh.
The transportation expenses of oil companies increase due to winding roads in the mountains, fuel consumption and weather challenges. This transportation cost is directly added to the dealer commission and local retail prices, making petrol and diesel costlier by ₹1 to ₹2 per liter in hilly districts compared to the plains.
