New ranking of Global Passport Index 2026 released, India slipped one place; Know the list of top 10 most powerful countries in the world including Sweden and Singapore
In the ‘Global Passport Index 2026’ released by Global Citizen Solutions, the Indian passport has fallen one place to 125th position compared to last year. In this global list of 197 countries, Namibia (124th) is one place above India and Azerbaijan (126th) is just below. Although there has been a slight drop in the ranking, India’s overall score has jumped to 45.1, the best performance for the Indian passport in the last five years. Not just visa-free travel, the real strength of a passport is decided on these 3 big parameters. Generally, many passport indexes decide the ranking only on the basis of how many countries you can visit without a visa. But ‘Global Passport Index’ prepares the report by examining 14 different parameters of the world’s major institutions including the World Bank and the World Economic Forum (WEF). It is mainly based on three big pillars: Mobility Index: Freedom to move easily around the world. Investment Opportunities (Investment Index): Favorable policies for business and investment in other countries. Quality of Life Index: Comforts and freedom in terms of living. European countries have sole rule in the top 10, Sweden becomes the world’s number-1 passport. In this new report for the year 2026, the dominance of European countries is clearly visible. Out of the top 10 most powerful passports in the world, 9 are occupied only by Europe. Sweden has become the most powerful passport in the world by occupying the first position in this list. After this comes Switzerland, Finland and Germany respectively. Netherlands and Denmark are jointly in fifth place. After this is Ireland, United Kingdom (UK) and Norway. Singapore becomes the only non-European superpower, Indians will still have to wait a long time. The surprising thing is that Singapore is the only country in the top 10 countries of this list which is outside Europe. According to the report, citizens who have passports of these top countries do not face any legal hurdles in doing business in any country, finding great job opportunities and easily settling there if needed. On the other hand, being ranked 125th, Indian passport holders still have to go through cumbersome paperwork, huge expenses and lengthy visa processes to travel to developed countries like the US, UK and EU.
