“We don’t have any information right now as to how many students have been abducted,” Dasso said. At present, about 10 victims have been rescued. The statement said the safety of children is a top priority and it is the responsibility of the Nigerian government to protect the education sector from armed groups operating in Northern Nigeria. The terrorist organization Boko Haram and its breakaway group ‘Islamic State West Africa Province’ (ISWAP) are active in northeastern Nigeria and the Lake Chad region. This region borders Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
Nigerian army had taken major action
Earlier this month, the Nigerian army freed more than 300 people kidnapped by Boko Haram from the town of Ngoshe. This town is about 114 kilometers away from Lassa where the incident of kidnapping of children took place on Monday. In May, Nigeria reported that 175 ISWAP militants were killed in a joint operation with the US.
