NEW DELHI, July 3: In a major step towards promoting traditional Indian medicine worldwide, NITI Aayog released the report “Strategic Roadmap for Making Ayurveda Global” on Thursday presenting a comprehensive strategy to enhance Ayurveda’s global recognition and adoption.

The report was launched by Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas, Member of NITI Aayog, and Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministries of Ayush and External Affairs, along with representatives from government agencies, research institutions, industry bodies and other key stakeholders.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lahiri said taking Ayurveda to the global stage presents a significant opportunity for India to emerge as a leader in traditional medicine. He noted that the initiative could boost exports, generate employment, create economic value and strengthen India’s cultural influence worldwide. Lahiri stressed that achieving these goals would require coordinated efforts across multiple government ministries and agencies.

Prof. Srinivas said the vision extends beyond expanding markets or increasing exports. He emphasized that the ultimate objective was to improve health outcomes by providing people across the world with scientifically validated Ayurvedic healthcare options, in line with the principle of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” (May all be happy).

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha highlighted the Ministry of Ayush’s efforts over the past decade to promote Ayurveda globally. He said the recommendations outlined in the roadmap would complement ongoing initiatives and accelerate the recognition of Ayurveda as a trusted and globally accepted healthcare system.

Acquino Vimal, Additional Secretary (UNES) in the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted India’s efforts to promote Ayurveda globally through international partnerships and diplomatic engagements, underscoring the growing global interest in traditional Indian medicine.

The report was prepared by NITI Aayog’s Health Division in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Based on extensive stakeholder consultations, international benchmarking and evidence-based analysis, it identifies key opportunities and challenges while outlining a roadmap to strengthen Ayurveda’s global presence.

The report is built around a three-pillar framework to support Ayurveda’s global expansion.

Availability – Globalized practice and workforce, stronger exports and manufacturing, international research, and standardized education.

Acceptability – Regulatory compliance, international academic and industry collaborations, insurance coverage, and cultural adaptability.

Propagation – Strategic branding, global promotion, medical value travel, and stronger presence in international organizations.

To achieve these objectives, the report proposes a phased strategy extending up to 2047in line with the vision of विक्सित भारत@2047.

Aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, the roadmap aims to guide policymakers, researchers, industry stakeholders, practitioners and international partners in strengthening research, education, exports, regulatory alignment and global collaboration. NITI Aayog said the initiative reinforces India’s commitment to the “One Earth, One Health” vision while advancing the country’s position as a global leader in traditional medicine.
