Gadkari’s reply to concerns about mileage drop

Talking about the issue of E-20 fuel reducing the mileage of vehicles, Gadkari said that the mileage of a vehicle is not only dependent on the fuel but also depends on various factors like the condition of the vehicle, driving style and roads.

He noted that the inter-ministerial committee set up by the NITI Aayog on December 26, 2020, had thoroughly studied all aspects related to ethanol blending in petrol—such as vehicle compatibility, mileage and fuel efficiency. The committee’s findings were also confirmed by studies conducted by Indian Oil, ARAI and SIAM. Gadkari said that before the implementation of E20, the committee’s report ‘Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India 2020-25’ was released in June 2021.

After consulting with automobile companies, oil marketing companies and agricultural experts, the report presented a detailed assessment of aspects such as material compatibility, engine calibration, fuel system, ease of driving, durability, emissions and fuel efficiency. He noted that the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program has been implemented through a phased, scientifically validated and comprehensive consultation process. Gadkari also pointed out that many countries around the world have been using ethanol-blended fuels for over a hundred years, and countries like Brazil have been successfully using ethanol-blended fuels for decades.
