A few months ago, there was a big controversy in the country over ethanol blended petrol. Motorists complained of low mileage, while fears were expressed about the effect of this fuel on the engines of older vehicles. Now Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has commented on this controversy and claimed that the agitation against E20 petrol is a ‘paid campaign’.
Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event, Gadkari presented his stand on the issue. About 3 months ago there was a massive protest against E20 petrol. He says that an atmosphere was deliberately created on this issue. He also mentioned that the protest has calmed down at present. However, independently verified information about his claim has not been given in the news.
Sugar Jaggery Price Hike : Ethanol responsible for all this? The common man’s pocket has been hit, the prices of sugar and jaggery have increased before the festivals
E100 Vehicles also allowed for fuel
Meanwhile, the central government has issued a notification to amend the motor vehicle rules. Under this change, flex-fuel vehicles are allowed to run on E100 fuel, which contains 100 percent ethanol. This permission does not mean that every petrol vehicle can run on E100. For that, the vehicle must be suitable for use of flex-fuel.
According to Gadkari, increased use of alternative fuels can reduce India’s dependence on crude oil. Hence, ethanol production, fuel alternatives and vehicle-related technologies may gain importance in the future. Drivers should still follow the fuel instructions in their vehicle handbook.
