Apple has clarified that customers will not have their devices locked or restricted if they miss payments under its new Apple Upgrade leasing programme. The statement comes after reports based on iOS 27 beta code suggested that leased iPhones could enter a “Restricted Mode” that blocked access to most apps if payments were overdue.
Apple has now confirmed that this feature will not be used for customers enrolled in Apple Upgrade.
What Sparked The Confusion?
The controversy began after developers discovered references in the iOS 27 beta to a system called Restricted Mode.
The code suggested that authorised financing partners could potentially limit access to most apps on a leased device if a customer defaulted on payments. The feature also included a Partner Finance Lock, designed to prevent a restricted device from being erased or resold.
These findings led to speculation that Apple would remotely disable leased iPhones when customers missed payments.
Apple Says Devices Won’t Be Restricted
Apple has now dismissed those concerns.
The company confirmed that Apple Upgrade customers will not lose access to their devices because of missed lease payments. In other words, iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches leased through the programme will continue to function normally even if a customer falls behind on payments.
The clarification means the reported Restricted Mode will not be activated as part of the Apple Upgrade programme.
What Happens If Payments Are Missed?
Although devices will not be locked, customers are still expected to meet their lease obligations.
The programme is financed through Klarna, and according to the lease terms, customers who miss three consecutive monthly payments may have their lease terminated. If that happens, they may be required to pay the remaining outstanding balance under the agreement.
This is a financial consequence rather than a technical restriction on the device.
How Apple Upgrade Works
Apple Upgrade allows US customers to lease eligible iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches by paying a fixed monthly amount instead of purchasing the device outright.
At the end of the lease, customers can:
- Upgrade to a newer Apple device
- Return the leased device
- Purchase the device by paying its remaining value
Unlike the older iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is not included and must be purchased separately.
Good News For Customers
Apple’s clarification removes one of the biggest concerns surrounding its new leasing model.
While customers are still legally responsible for making timely payments, they do not have to worry about their Apple devices suddenly becoming unusable because of missed instalments. The focus remains on resolving payment issues through the lease agreement rather than restricting access to the hardware.
Summary
Apple has confirmed that devices leased through its new Apple Upgrade programme will not be locked or placed into a restricted mode if customers miss payments, despite earlier speculation based on iOS 27 beta code. However, customers who miss three consecutive payments may have their lease terminated and could be required to pay the remaining outstanding balance under Klarna’s financing agreement.
