New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its decision on a petition demanding a complete ban on the use of firecrackers during Diwali in Delhi-NCR. During the hearing, the court orally said that it was not in favor of a complete ban on firecrackers, as it could have far-reaching effects. However, the court stressed on effectively implementing the pollution control orders and also warned the authorities of strict action.
There is no ban on firecrackers, it is necessary to strictly follow the rules
Justice M.M. Sundaresh and Justice P.B. Varale's bench said that merely imposing a ban would not provide a permanent solution to the problem of pollution. If the court orders are not followed, they will become a mere 'joke'.
The court directed the Central Government to file an affidavit giving information about the steps taken to implement the ban on firecrackers. Also warned the officials not to create such a situation in which the court has to take strict action.
Will Virat Kohli spread awareness against pollution?
During the hearing, the Supreme Court suggested involving popular players and eminent people of the society like Virat Kohli in the public awareness campaign against pollution.
The bench said that messages from celebrities can inspire people to celebrate a pollution-free Diwali. According to the court, it is very important to make the new generation aware of the ill effects of air pollution.
Fear of hurting sentiments due to complete ban on firecrackers
The Supreme Court remarked that a complete ban on firecrackers could affect the sentiments of people, while allowing bursting of firecrackers throughout the day could be harmful for children, the elderly and other living beings. The court also considered the issue of open field testing of firecrackers containing barium.
Legal battle to ban firecrackers is going on since 2015
The case pertains to a petition filed by three children in 2015, demanding a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR, citing poor air quality. In the year 2018, the Supreme Court had banned the use of barium salt in firecrackers and firecracker strings.
For now, the court has reserved its final decision. In such a situation, we will have to wait for the court's decision for final guidelines regarding firecrackers on Diwali.
