Not India! Brian Lara predicts the winner of ODI World Cup 2027. Read

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is starting to take shape, with its 14th edition set to begin on October 2. South Africa, Namibia And zimbabwe will be co-organizing the competition, while the race for qualification is still ongoing, with several teams competing for the remaining spots.

As the tournament is getting closer, discussions have started about the possible favorite teams. former west indies captain brian lara has also shared his prediction, naming a team that will go all the way. His choice is particularly notable because India And Australiawho were finalists and champions of the 2023 edition, were not included in their selection.

Brian Lara selected No. 1 squad for ODI World Cup 2027

Speaking at the official launch event of the 2027 ODI World Cup, Lara identified South Africa as their top contenders for the title. The Proteas will get the advantage of competition while playing on home soil, which according to Lara could work strongly in their favour.

“South Africa are hosting after 24 years, I have confidence in them this time. I think they are going to be my No. 1 team,” Lara said.

South Africa last hosted the ODI World Cup in 2003, when they co-hosted the tournament along with Zimbabwe and Kenya. More than two decades later, the Proteas will once again get the opportunity to compete for the biggest prize in ODI cricket in front of their home supporters.

Lara's prediction also comes as South Africa look to make the most of familiar playing conditions. The tournament will have a strong Southern African flavor due to Namibia and Zimbabwe co-hosting it.

Lara kept the door open for West Indies

Although South Africa emerged as Lara's obvious choice, the former West Indies captain did not completely rule out his home team's chances. However, West Indies will have to overcome the qualification process before they can dream of competing in the 2027 World Cup.

“Don't overlook West Indies being successful and making some waves in the qualifiers,” Lara said.

West Indies missed out on direct qualification by finishing 10th in the ICC ODI rankings at the cutoff on 30 September. Only the top eight teams gained direct qualification, leaving the Caribbean team dependent on upcoming qualifying events. This makes the road to the World Cup quite challenging for them, but Lara believes they can still make an impact if they are successful in securing their place in the tournament.

India and Australia out of Lara's prediction

The most interesting aspect of Lara's prediction is his omission from mentioning the teams. India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, while Australia defeated the Rohit Sharma-led side in the final to lift the trophy. India also has experienced stars like Rohit and Virat Kohli are expected to be present, making Lara not selecting them particularly notable.

Meanwhile, Australia will enter the next World Cup as reigning champions. Nevertheless Lara decided to show confidence in South Africa.

While the 2027 World Cup is still some time away, there will be ample opportunities for teams to strengthen their squads and build momentum. For now, Lara has made his choice clear: the Proteas are the No. 1 team for his coveted ODI World Cup title.
