ODOC Scheme: Big initiative of UP government for food businesses, subsidy up to Rs 50 lakh

The Uttar Pradesh government has started rapidly promoting the ‘One District One Cuisine’ (ODOC) scheme to give a new identity to the traditional dishes and food products of the state. The aim of this ambitious initiative of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is to take the specific food products and traditional dishes of each district to the national and international markets. This scheme has been prepared on the lines of the state’s successful ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) scheme.

Food entrepreneurs will get financial support

Under the scheme, special incentives will be given to entrepreneurs associated with food processing and traditional cuisine industry. The government will provide grants and financial assistance for projects to eligible entrepreneurs. The main objective of the scheme is to connect small businessmen, confectioners, food artisans and micro industries with modern technology, better packaging and marketing facilities.

Every district will have its own special flavor

Special recognition will be given to any one traditional and popular food item from all the districts of the state. Petha of Agra, Peda of Mathura, Samosa of Kanpur, Longlata of Varanasi and other local dishes will be able to reach big markets through this scheme. The government believes that this will not only strengthen local identity but will also promote tourism.

New opportunities for employment and self-employment

The ODOC scheme is not limited to promotion of food products only. Through this, new employment and self-employment opportunities will also be created for youth, women and small entrepreneurs. The expansion of food processing units, packaging centers and marketing networks is likely to provide direct and indirect employment to thousands of people.

Emphasis will be on quality and branding

The government is giving priority to quality, hygiene and food safety standards under this scheme. Work will also be done towards ensuring attractive packaging, branding, GI tagging of products and availability on e-commerce platforms. This will increase the reach of local products not only in the country but also in foreign markets.

‘Brand UP’ will get new strength

Experts believe that the ODOC scheme will play an important role in giving a new identity to the cultural heritage and food traditions of Uttar Pradesh. After the success of ODOP, this new initiative will further strengthen ‘Brand UP’ and will become a medium to give global recognition to the local taste. Besides, this is also expected to give new impetus to the state’s economy, tourism and food industry.
