One house, one LPG connection rules strict: Order to surrender extra cylinders immediately
New Delhi: The Central Government has made a major change in the rules related to gas distribution and made it clear that now only one LPG connection will be valid in the name of any one family. After this amendment made in the Gas Control Order, having more than one LPG connection in a house has been completely banned.
Appeal made to customers
Oil marketing companies Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have jointly issued public information for consumers. In this, an appeal has been made to all the customers that the families who have more than one gas connection should immediately surrender the additional connection. The companies have also made it clear that this rule will be strictly enforced from June 1 and action can be taken against violators.
According to the new rules, the definition of a family will include husband and wife, their unmarried or married children and dependent parents. Only one LPG connection will be considered valid for the entire family. If a consumer is found to have more than one connection, his gas supply may be temporarily stopped. Supply will resume only when all additional connections are completely surrendered.
After the surrender process, if the consumer is left with only one connection, he can also be given the facility to convert it into Double Bottle Connection (DBC) as per requirement, so that continuous supply of gas is maintained.
Apart from this, rules have also been tightened for consumers having PNG (piped natural gas) connections. It will be mandatory for such consumers to surrender their LPG connections immediately. Under the amendment of 25 May 2026, a provision has also been made that it is necessary to close the LPG connection within 30 days of taking the PNG connection. However, if consumers wish, they can also obtain transfer vouchers, so that in future, if PNG is not available in any area, the LPG connection can be reactivated.
What do oil companies say?
The government and oil companies say that the aim of this step is to provide LPG connections to needy families, prevent misuse of subsidies and curb black marketing of gas. Besides, promoting the use of PNG as a clean fuel is also the main goal of this policy.
Oil companies have appealed to consumers to follow the rules and complete the process of surrendering additional connections through their nearest distributor or online as soon as possible.
