Government is selling onion at Rs 35 per kg
The government has stored onion in buffer stock, but the biggest challenge is how to transport it from production areas to various cities and markets across the country. The government has started sale of onion from buffer stock from August 24. NCCF, NAFED, central godowns and mobile vans are being used for this. Onion Express is transporting onions from producing states to major consumer cities.
Why is onion becoming expensive?
One of the major reasons for the rise in onion prices is the time between harvesting in the Rabi and Kharif seasons. Generally, during this period, stocks of old rabi onions gradually deplete and the new kharif crop is not fully in the market. This reduces the supply of onion for some time, which increases the prices.
Is there a shortage of onions in the country?
According to the government, there is no total shortage of onion in the country. Onion production is estimated at 30.737 million tonnes in 2025-26, which is almost the same as last year's 30.767 million tonnes. The government had set a target to procure 20 lakh tonnes of rabi onion for buffer stock in 2026-27. Of this, approximately 1.21 million tonnes of onion has already been procured. The procurement rate has also been increased from Rs 18.75 to Rs 21.25 per kg to ensure a better price for farmers selling onion for buffer stock.
