New Delhi: OpenAI has reportedly acquired camera technology startup Glass Imaging in a deal valued at more than $300 million (around ₹2,500 crore), strengthening the ChatGPT maker’s push into consumer hardware and bringing former Apple engineers behind the iPhone’s Portrait Mode technology into its fold.
The reported acquisition is the latest indication that OpenAI is looking beyond software and artificial intelligence models towards devices and hardware that could bring AI into everyday consumer experiences.
OpenAI’s latest hardware move
According to reports, OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging for more than $300 million. The deal was first reported by The Wall Street Journal and subsequently reported by technology publications including TechCrunch.
Neither OpenAI nor Glass Imaging has publicly confirmed the transaction. OpenAI also did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reported acquisition.
Glass Imaging, founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, specialises in computational photography and AI-powered camera technology designed to improve image quality from compact camera systems.
The acquisition would give OpenAI access to technology and expertise that could be particularly valuable as the company develops its consumer hardware strategy.
Former Apple engineers join OpenAI’s ecosystem
Glass Imaging was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both former Apple engineers who worked on computational photography and helped develop the technology behind Apple’s Portrait Mode.
Attar had previously founded Israeli camera startup LinX Imaging, which was acquired by Apple in 2015. At Glass Imaging, the founders turned their attention towards using AI and neural networks to overcome some of the physical limitations of smartphone cameras.
Their experience could prove significant for OpenAI as it explores ways to combine artificial intelligence with cameras, sensors and other consumer hardware.
Glass Imaging uses AI before a photo is taken
One of Glass Imaging’s key ideas is to use AI much earlier in the photography process rather than relying only on software editing after an image has been captured.
The company’s technology uses neural networks trained around specific camera systems and sensors. This approach is designed to improve the image generated from the camera at the point of capture.
Glass Imaging’s technology has already moved beyond the laboratory. Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor has used its technology for zoom capabilities in some devices, according to reports. The company has also demonstrated AI-based raw-video processing running on Qualcomm chipsets.
The technology could potentially give OpenAI an advantage if the company eventually integrates advanced camera capabilities into its own consumer devices.
OpenAI’s broader consumer hardware ambitions
The Glass Imaging acquisition comes after OpenAI made one of its biggest moves into consumer hardware by acquiring the startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
In 2025, OpenAI completed a deal valued at approximately $6.5 billion involving Ive’s io Products. The partnership brought together OpenAI’s AI capabilities and Ive’s experience in designing consumer electronics.
Since then, reports have suggested that OpenAI has been exploring several categories of AI-powered hardware. These have included potential devices such as an AI companion, earbuds and other products designed around a more natural interaction with artificial intelligence.
The company has not confirmed all of the reported products or provided a detailed consumer hardware roadmap.
Why camera technology could matter
A camera could become an important component of future AI devices because it allows an AI system to understand the physical world around a user.
Instead of interacting with an AI assistant only through text or voice, a camera-enabled device could allow the system to interpret objects, documents, surroundings and visual information in real time.
Combining OpenAI’s multimodal AI capabilities with Glass Imaging’s camera expertise could therefore potentially support a new generation of AI hardware.
However, there is currently no confirmation that the reported acquisition will result in a smartphone, camera or any particular consumer product.
Glass Imaging had raised about $30 million
Before the reported acquisition, Glass Imaging had raised roughly $30 million from investors.
The company raised around $9.3 million in an extended seed round in 2024, followed by a $20 million Series A led by Insight Partners in 2025, according to reports.
The reported purchase price of more than $300 million therefore represents a substantial premium over the external funding Glass Imaging had previously raised.
The acquisition also illustrates the growing value of specialist teams with expertise in AI-powered imaging as technology companies compete to develop smaller and more capable consumer devices.
OpenAI moves deeper into hardware
OpenAI’s reported purchase of Glass Imaging marks another step in its transformation from an AI software company into a broader consumer technology player.
The company already operates ChatGPT across smartphones and computers, but hardware could give it greater control over how users interact with its AI systems.
