Follow the following precautions to keep your eyes safe:
- What to do while burning crackers
- Wear protective goggles: Be sure to use zero-power safety goggles while burning or viewing firecrackers. It protects the eyes from sparks and gunpowder particles.
- Maintain safe distance: Always burn crackers at a certain distance away from your face, with arms extended. Never bring your face above a burning firecracker.
- Supervise children: Never let children burn crackers alone. Their fireworks should always be under the supervision of adults.
- Avoid contact lenses and makeup: Avoid wearing contact lenses while burning crackers, as the lenses can cause eye discomfort due to the smoke. Do not use heavy eye-makeup and clean it thoroughly before sleeping.
- Wear cotton clothes: Instead of loose or synthetic clothes, wear cotton clothes and shoes that completely cover the body.
- Emergency management—what to do in case of injury or burn
- Do not rub your eyes at all: If any spark, smoke or particle of gunpowder gets into your eyes, do not rub them even by mistake. Rubbing can cause permanent scratches on the cornea of the eye.
- Wash with clean water: In case of irritation or dust in the eyes, immediately sprinkle clean and cold water. Wash your hands thoroughly first.
- Do not adopt home remedies: Do not apply toothpaste, ghee, butter or any home drops yourself in case of eye injury. Using any eye drop without doctor's advice can be dangerous.
- Do not apply pressure: If there is a serious injury to the eye, do not apply pressure or bandage the eye with force.
When is it necessary to go to the hospital immediately?
If a firecracker has got directly into the eye, vision has suddenly become blurred, water or blood is continuously coming from the eye, or redness has increased along with severe pain, then immediately contact the nearest ophthalmologist without wasting a minute.
