Deepika Padukone’s Bajirao Mastani costume designer, Maxima Basu, recently shared a sneak peek into the costumes worn by the dancers in the film.
The Indian fashion designer, who won the Filmfare Award for Best Costume Design in 2016 for her work on the 2015 historical romance, reflected on the details that went into creating the costumes during the shoot.
While addressing the Screen Academy, Basu revealed how styling plays a significant role in filmmaking.
Speaking about the iconic song Deewani Mastani, she recalled, “Since Deepika wore the mehendi colour, I told Bhansali back dancers can’t wear peach because they’d distract from the beauty of Deepika. Also, their costume mirror work should look like the background mirror. When you work with colour, you focus on where the eye should go.”
She later recalled Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s keen eye for colour and shared his response: “A lot of times, we don’t notice the back dancers because they’re the moving environment.”
During her conversation with students at the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, the Padmaavat designer explained the significance of costumes that are not meant to draw attention.
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bajirao Mastani starred Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles.
Padukone, 40, earned widespread acclaim for her fierce portrayal of Mastani in the film.
