Pakistan Bans Foreign Media From Reporting Outside Major Cities: The Pakistani government has imposed new restrictions on foreign media reporting. Foreign journalists working for international media organizations will now be required to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the government before reporting in any area outside Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
This move is believed to be specifically aimed at preventing independent coverage of popular movements and repression in sensitive areas such as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Balochistan. Without this NOC, no foreign reporter will be able to report independently in these sensitive areas.
Crackdown on Al Jazeera
In fact, in recent days, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has witnessed widespread and violent protests over inflation, administrative chaos, and elections. These mass movements, along with reports of the military’s repression and use of force against protesters, have been widely covered globally by the international media.
Alarmed by this growing international coverage, the Shahbaz Sharif government has chosen to tighten surveillance and control over the media. Under the new system, foreign journalists will be barred from entering sensitive areas without authorization to conduct independent reporting, preventing the ground reality from being revealed to the world.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani government was deeply angered by the unbiased ground reporting of the ongoing protests and electoral fraud by the leading international news channel, Al Jazeera, in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Information Ministry even blocked its website there, accusing the channel of presenting a false picture of the electoral process.
Serious questions on press freedom
Following the controversy, Al Jazeera’s digital access in Pakistan has been severely restricted. Media organizations say this authoritarian government action will severely impact press freedom and make it virtually impossible for foreign journalists to work impartially.
Human rights organizations have also openly criticized the government’s harsh decisions, stating that they will make impartial reporting on the ground difficult. India has also openly criticized Pakistan for the local elections held in PoK and for suppressing the democratic voice of the people there.
This suppression of the voice of the free press could further isolate Pakistan on a global scale, where democracy and human rights are constantly being violated. This serious crisis will completely tarnish the country’s image internationally.
