Pakistan struggles with financial instability and political uncertainty amid IMF reliance
Pakistan is facing a multitude of issues now, both domestically and internationally. Economically, Pakistan is struggling, as the country suffers from financial instability, political uncertainty, excessive inflation, and ongoing security issues. The country is highly reliant upon financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as well as assistance from other countries they partner with. Pakistan has also worked closely with the US on regional security/counterterrorism issues, although the US has placed greater emphasis on the Indo-Pacific area over the last few years.
To highlight concerns regarding cross-border terrorism affecting India, the recent diplomatic initiatives by PM Modi have improved India’s global image and generated increased global interest regarding security issues involving Pakistan.
Since becoming Prime Minister, Modi has been clear that any discussions of terrorism and dialogue cannot occur simultaneously, and therefore, counterterrorism has become a focus of Indian Foreign Policy. India has brought the issue of cross-border terrorism to international forums, such as the UN, and called for increased international cooperation in combating global terrorist networks.
In the last ten years, India has made efforts toward expanding its diplomatic outreach by developing closer ties with major powers like the United States, Japan, Australia, many European countries, and the Gulf region. Experts believe these alliances have allowed India to expand its influence over issues affecting global security and economy as well as provide a stronger image as a responsible international actor.
Pakistan continues to interface with other nations, including the US and China; however, supporters of the Modi administration claim India never sought the total diplomatic isolation of Pakistan. They state India only wishes to ensure that terrorism remains an issue on the international agenda and included in decision-making.
Analysts point to enhanced global cooperation on counter-terrorism initiatives, increased investigation into the financing of extremism, and enhanced worldwide support on counter-terrorism efforts as evidence that progress has been made. Other commentators have suggested that parts of the international media have presented an incomplete or one-sided representation of India’s security issues; they argue that reporting has tended to focus on diplomatic tensions, while paying less attention to India’s long-standing allegation of cross-border terrorism.
Officials assert that India’s plan has augmented India’s global power while keeping the issue of terrorism at the top of the international dialogue.
