New Delhi: Ekadashi fast has special significance in Hindu religion. This date, which comes twice every month, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month is called Parivartini Ekadashi or Padma Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu sleeps during Chaturmas. On this day they change sides, hence the name Parivartini.
According to the Panchang, Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi date will start at 8:00 PM on 21st September 2026 and will end at 9:43 PM on 22nd September. Due to Udaya Tithi according to sunrise, the main fast will be observed on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. The time of breaking the fast i.e. Paran is from 6:10 am to 8:35 am the next day on 23rd September.

Long ago, King Bali was very powerful and generous. He had conquered all three worlds with his devotion. The gods got scared and approached Lord Vishnu. Lord took Vaman incarnation and disguised himself as a small Brahmin and asked for three steps of land as donation from King Bali. Despite the Guru's warning, Bali kept his promise. God assumed a huge form and covered the earth with one step and the sky with the other. When there was no room for the third step, Bali placed his head at the feet. Pleased with his devotion, God made him the king of the underworld and gave him the boon of staying with him during Chaturmas. On this day God changes sides.
Importance of fasting and method of worship
By this fast all sins are washed away and ultimately one attains Vaikuntha. On this day, special worship of Vaman form of Lord Vishnu is done. Happiness, peace and prosperity come to the house. The troubles of life go away. Wake up early in the morning and take bath. Keep the fast by taking satvik food or only fruits and milk.
Light a lamp in front of the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu or Vaman. Plant Tulsi group, flowers and offerings. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama or Ekadashi Katha. By doing charity the results increase further. This time Parivartini Ekadashi is on 22nd September. Keep the fast by noting the right time and get the blessings of God.
