Patiala Pitbull Attack: An incident has come to light when a pitbull suddenly attacked a couple who went to rent a house in Ghumman Nagar, Patiala, Punjab. Ankit Sabharwal and his wife Shifali went to view the house with a property dealer. As soon as the gate of the house was opened, the dog came out and attacked Shifali. He reportedly sustained serious injuries on his hands and other parts of his body and required surgery. What exactly is a pitbull?
'Pitbull' is not the name of a single official dog breed. The term is often used for certain pit bull-type dogs. Among them, the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is the dominant breed. These dogs are known for their strong, athletic and muscular physique. Hence, physical injuries caused by them during an attack are taken seriously.
Where did the name Pitbull come from?
The history of this type of dog is linked to bull-baiting and other blood sports in 19th century Britain. Bull-and-Terrier type dogs were used in such fights. It is said that the name 'Pit Bull' came into being as the dogs were put into the 'pit' i.e. fighting arena. Sports such as bull-baiting were banned in Britain in 1835 after the Anti-Cruelty to Animals Act. However, the breeding and use of these types of dogs continued in various forms.
Do pitbull jaws really lock?

Bite force is not the only issue with pit bulls or pit bull-type dogs. Dog size, physical strength, training, socialization, conditions, owner control, and dog behavior during an attack—all play a role. Therefore, it is not correct to conclude that every dog in an entire breed is aggressive. A dog's behavior is influenced by genetics, training, upbringing and environment.

Is pitbull banned in India?
On 12 March 2024, the Union Government's Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying had issued a circular suggesting restrictions on the import, breeding, sale and keeping as pets of 23 types of 'ferocious and dangerous' dogs, including pit bull terriers. The local bodies concerned were directed not to issue new licenses for such dogs and also to sterilize existing dogs. But this circular was challenged in various courts.
The Delhi High Court set aside the Centre's circular in April 2024, while the Karnataka High Court also objected to it. One of the key issues was whether the process involved adequate consultation with concerned dog owners, breeders and other stakeholders. Then in January 2025, the central government told the Bombay High Court that the March 2024 circular was not being implemented at present and objections and suggestions were invited in May 2024.
