Business stronger in the long run
“We're excited by the momentum we're building as pep+ transforms our business,” said Jim Andrews, PepsiCo's Chief Sustainability Officer. We're making significant progress – from expanding regenerative, restorative and conservation practices to 4.7 million acres, to reducing emissions from our operations, and changing our product portfolio to offer more options, and we're doing it in ways we believe will make our business stronger for the long term. Although there is still much work to be done, this progress shows that we are taking consistent steps to embed sustainability in our operations, innovation and growth.
Inextricably linked to health
In India, these global ambitions are translating into efforts in our food value chain; From farmers and natural resources to manufacturing, packaging, logistics and consumers. Rooted in its 'pep+' ambition and local philosophy of 'Partnerships for Progress', PepsiCo is working with farmers, communities, governments, industry partners and consumers to create a more resilient food system. PepsiCo recognizes that the long-term health of a business is inextricably linked to the health of the ecosystem in which it operates. PepsiCo India engages with approximately 36,000 farmers across 14 states in India and procures 100% of the potatoes for its chips locally within the country.
Each part of the value chain is interconnected
“In India, our growth is deeply linked to the strength and resilience of the ecosystems around us. From the farmers who grow our ingredients and the communities in our operations, to the natural resources we depend on and the customers we serve, every part of our value chain is interconnected,” said Yashika Singh, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and Head of Sustainability, PepsiCo India and South Asia.
Improves water and resource efficiency
She added, “PepsiCo Positive and our 'Partnership for Progress' philosophy are about turning this interdependence into shared development. When we strive to help farmers become more resilient, we strengthen our supply chains; when we improve water and resource efficiency, we build operational resilience; when we promote cyclicality, we help strengthen the systems we depend on; and when we grow our portfolio, we Responds to changing consumer preferences. This is how we view sustainable development; not as a separate agenda, but as an integral part of building a strong business and contributing to the progress of communities, consumers and the planet.”
Adoption of micro-irrigation in potato fields
Over the years, the company has partnered with start-ups to accelerate the adoption of digital technologies in its farmer network. Through initiatives such as 'Mitti Didi', which provides thousands of farmers with soil health diagnostics and real-time information on farming, and 'Ledge Smart Farms' developed with Croppin, PepsiCo is using technology to improve farm productivity and resource efficiency. The Smart Farms program spans over 18,000 acres of mapped area and provides insights to over 7,000 farmers, while micro-irrigation adoption has reached 100% in potato fields in key source regions, including over 2,300 acres in Uttar Pradesh.
An important resource for both communities and businesses
This emphasis on resilience through innovation also extends to water, an important shared resource for both communities and businesses. PepsiCo's Sustainable Water Resource Development and Management returns more than 100% of the water used in water-stressed production facilities to local watersheds. The manufacturing facility in Pune is a great example of our water conservation efforts, where water consumption has been reduced by over 90%. Globally, PepsiCo has returned 23 billion liters of water to local ecosystems since 2010, providing access to safe water for approximately 97 million people.
PepsiCo is also driving the transition to a more cyclical and resource-efficient value chain in India. The company complies with local Extended Producer Responsibility requirements for both its food and beverage businesses. It is redesigning its packaging to reduce material use and improve recyclability, including adopting mono-material and polyolefin-based designs for its food packaging and transitioning to 100% rPET bottles for select products in its beverage business.
Age of packaging. Additionally, biomass accounts for 97% of PepsiCo India's fuel mix, supporting the company's transition to low-carbon operations.
PepsiCo India is also promoting clean transportation through the Kosi-Pataudi EV Green Corridor, developed in partnership with Kalyani Powertrain Limited and Vayudut Road Carriers. The corridor is currently operational with thirteen 32-foot electric container trucks, enabling the transportation of approximately 6 lakh electric kilometers per year. PepsiCo India has already refurbished more than 800 vehicles including vehicles connected to distributors for last-mile delivery across the country, accelerating the transition to more sustainable mobility in its distribution network.
Develop your portfolio according to preference
The company is also evolving its portfolio as per the changing preferences of the customers. More than 50% of PepsiCo's beverage portfolio in India is now low- or zero-sugar. In the convenience food space, PepsiCo continues to expand positive options. These include products such as the baked variant of 'Red Rock Deli' with 40% less fat and the millet-based 'Crunchy Jowari Puffs' that celebrate India's agricultural heritage. This is part of PepsiCo's broader efforts to provide consumers with more options to suit different tastes, preferences and lifestyles.
PepsiCo's approach to sustainable business transformation
Together, these efforts reflect PepsiCo's approach to sustainable business transformation in India, where progress in one part of the value chain can reinforce another. By investing in farmers, communities, resources, operations and consumer choices, PepsiCo aims to create a positive cycle in which more resilient ecosystems support more resilient businesses and create long-term value for businesses, communities, consumers and the planet.
