Petrol Pump: Questions were being raised on the quality of petrol pumps across the country, after which major action has been taken by the government. The petrol pumps where there was a lot of fuel have been closed by the government.
Sale of petrol has been stopped at 2573 retail fuel outlets. The main focus of the investigation is on the possibility of water reaching the petrol storage system and affecting the quality of the fuel.
Why was such a big action taken against petrol pumps?
Following complaints related to petrol quality and vehicle defects, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and government oil companies have launched a comprehensive investigation across the country. Under this campaign, the entire fuel distribution network along with petrol pumps is being inspected.
There are more than 89 thousand retail fuel outlets under the supervision of the government. An important part of the investigation is to detect the presence of water in the underground petrol storage tanks. If water gets mixed with fuel, its quality may be affected and complaints of vehicle problems may arise.
How many petrol pumps of which company were affected?
According to available information, the number of pumps of government oil companies in 2573 outlets where sales have been banned is as follows:
- Indian Oil Corporation: 1257 petrol pump
- Hindustan Petroleum Corporation: 915 petrol pump
- Bharat Petroleum Corporation: 401 petrol pump
In these figures, the maximum number of petrol pumps belong to Indian Oil. However, the ban on sales is aimed at protecting consumers from poor quality fuel and to clarify the status of potentially problematic outlets during the investigation.
Storage tank being checked several times a day (Petrol Pump)
The investigation is not limited to petrol samples only. The underground storage tanks at petrol pumps are also being monitored. According to the issued testing guidelines, at some places tanks are being tested several times a day.
If any defect is found in the monitoring system during the inspection, the process of repairing it or replacing it if necessary is also being done. Its purpose is to detect quality problems caused by water in the fuel or any other reason in time.
Investigation moved ahead from petrol pump, tanker and depot also under surveillance
The government and oil companies have expanded the scope of quality checks beyond petrol pumps. Now tankers, ethanol storage, depots and terminals used in the fuel distribution network are also being investigated.
Through this, an attempt is being made to find out at which level of the supply chain the problem in fuel quality is arising.
Auto companies are also checking fuel quality
Automobile companies are also cautious about the quality of fuel. At the industry level, more than 250 fuel samples taken from different states and union territories have been tested.
Major automobile manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have also conducted investigations on fuel quality related issues.
What does this mean for customers?
At present, the biggest objective of this action is to stop the sale of fuel with suspicious or quality related problems and to investigate the entire system. Therefore, the further situation will be clear only after the completion of investigation and confirmation of quality standards on pumps where sales have been stopped.
If a driver experiences unusual engine trouble, jerking or starting problems after filling petrol, then he should get the vehicle checked at an authorized service center.
