Now more Ethanol will be available in petrol, big decision of the government, it may affect your car

Ethanol Blending India: Amidst the increasing changes and inflation in the country, the government has taken a big step to reduce petrol prices and dependence on crude oil imports. Let us tell you that after E20, preparations are being made to implement new fuel standards in India with high ethanol-petrol blends like E22, E25, E27 and E30. Due to which the amount of ethanol in petrol can increase by more than 20%. This decision of the government has come at a time when the global energy supply chain has been affected due to the ongoing tension in West Asia. At the same time, the availability of ethanol has also increased in the country, which the government is now trying to put into use.

What will change with the new fuel standard?

Bureau of Indian Standards i.e. BIS had issued new fuel standards on May 15. Within which technical and safety rules have been set for new blended fuels like E22, E25, E27 and E30. Let us tell you that in these fuels, ethanol without water will be mixed with petrol. Regarding this, fuel quality, mixture limits, safety parameters and testing methods have also been included in the new rules. Due to which the objective of the government is clear that it wants to promote the domestic ethanol industry in India by gradually increasing the quantity of ethanol in petrol and reducing the expenditure on import of crude oil.

Will your existing vehicle be affected?

After the introduction of this new rule, people are starting to worry about what effect it will have on their vehicle. For information, let us tell you that at present most of the vehicles in the country are designed according to E10 i.e. petrol with 10% ethanol. It is being said that fully E20 compliant vehicles are expected to enter the market on a large scale after April 2026. In such a situation, the biggest question is that if up to 25% ethanol is mixed in petrol, will there be any impact on the engine, mileage and performance of the existing vehicles.

In such a situation, to address this concern of the people, Automotive Research Association of India i.e. ARAI has been given the responsibility of conducting a detailed study. In this study, work will be done on E10 and E20 compliant vehicles to find out what effect excessive ethanol blending has on engine life, mileage and emissions.

Why does the government want to increase Ethanol Blending?

Experts say on this matter that at present India has surplus stock of ethanol. In view of this, the government wants to reduce the cost of oil import by mixing it in larger quantities with petrol. In such a situation, All India Distillers Association has described this step of the government as an important and timely step. But this cannot be ignored that before any major change, it is necessary to test the vehicles for 60,000 to 70,000 kilometers so that the long term effect can be understood properly.

Now it is being said that if the government goes ahead with E20, India’s fuel system may change completely in the coming years. After which its effect will also be seen on the models of vehicles coming in the market.
