As a member of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), it is your right to have up-to-date information about your PF account. If you want, you can easily check your PF balance online sitting at home or even offline through SMS and missed call. For this, there are many great options like UMANG app and EPF portal.

Whenever you have to withdraw PF money for medical emergency, household expenses or any other need, or have to calculate the interest received on it, it becomes very important to have correct information about the balance.

What is EPF balance and why is it important?

EPF balance or PF passbook is the amount deposited in your account every month on behalf of you and your company. This creates a large financial fund for your retirement.

Apart from this, if you are unemployed for more than a month, there is a sudden medical emergency, or any other major problem arises, then this deposit amount becomes your biggest support.

Online and offline ways to check EPF balance

You can check your PF balance with or without UAN in the following ways:

Check PF balance through SMS

If you want to know the balance immediately by sending a message, then you have to send an SMS to EPFO from your registered mobile number:

SMS Format: Write EPFOHO UAN and send it to 7738299899.

How to know balance by giving missed call

You can easily check PF balance even without UAN. For this you just have to give a missed call on the number given below:

Missed call number: 9966044425

As soon as you call this, you will get information about the last contribution and total PF balance on your phone.

Things to keep in mind:

Your UAN should be active.
Missed calls should be made from the same number which is registered with your UAN.
It is necessary to link PAN, Aadhaar and bank account with UAN.

PF Balance Inquiry through UMANG App

Many services of EPFO are also available on the government’s centralized mobile app ‘UMANG’. You can easily view your passbook by logging in through UAN and OTP.

Step 1: Download UMANG app from Play Store or App Store.

Step 2: Open the app, select your preferred language and accept the terms and conditions.

Step 3: Register and verify with your mobile number.

Step 4: Click on the ‘All Services’ option given below.

Step 5: Find and select ‘EPFO’ from the list.

Step 6: Click on ‘View Passbook’ to view the balance.

Step 7: Enter your UAN and select your existing company name. Your passbook and EPF balance will be visible on the screen.

Check online with the help of EPFO portal

You can also check your balance directly by visiting the official website of EPFO:

Step 1: Go to the official website of EPFO (www.epfindia.gov.in).

Step 2: Click on ‘For Employees’ from the ‘Services’ drop-down menu.

Step 3: After this, click on ‘Member Passbook’ in the ‘Services’ menu itself.

Step 4: Log in by entering your UAN, password and OTP received on the registered mobile number.

Step 5: After logging in to the portal, go to the ‘Passbook’ tab and select your member ID. If you want, you can also download the passbook in PDF format.

Take special care of these things while checking PF from website

If you are using the EPFO website, then some important rules may be useful to you:

Only members having registered and activated account on UAN Member Portal can check balance online through the website.
You will be able to see your passbook only after at least 6 hours of registration on the UAN portal.
Any change or update made on the portal is reflected on the website only after 6 hours.
Only those entries will appear in the passbook which have been reconciled by the EPFO field office.
People whose accounts fall in ‘Exempt Establishment’, ‘Settled Members’ or ‘Inoperative’ categories will not be able to view the passbook on the website.
If you do not make any contribution to your EPF account for 3 consecutive years, your account is declared inoperative.
