Technology Desk – PIB Warning Fake AI Videos: The Central Government’s fact check agency Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a big alert regarding some videos going viral on social media in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Piyush Goyal. PIB has clarified that these videos are not real, but are deepfake videos created with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The agency has appealed to people not to believe such misleading videos and not to share them further without verification.

What did PIB say?

According to the Fact Check Unit of PIB, the voice and facial expressions of the Prime Minister and the Union Minister in the viral video have been changed with digital technology in such a way that they appear real to the viewers. Investigation found that the two leaders had never said the things shown in the video. The agency says that such videos have been prepared with the aim of misleading people and spreading wrong information.

AI changes in old videos

During investigation it was revealed that some viral clips were based on old original videos. In these, changes were made in both audio and visuals with the help of AI, so that it seemed as if the leaders had given controversial statements. PIB clarified that the content of these videos does not match the actual events or official statements.

What is Deepfake?

Deepfake is a technology in which Artificial Intelligence creates a new video or audio by exactly copying a person’s face, voice and speaking style. At first glance it looks absolutely real, but in reality it has been created or altered by computer technology.

How are such videos prepared?

To create a deepfake, AI first studies a large number of photos, videos and audios of a person. After this he learns the facial structure, eye movements, way of speaking and style of voice. This information is then used to create a video in which the person appears to say or do things that he or she would never have actually done.

Every Deepfake is not wrong, but misuse is a big danger

This technology is also used in creative fields like films, digital content, education and visual effects. But its misuse is increasing rapidly. The use of Deepfake is becoming a matter of concern in cases like fake statements, political propaganda, spreading rumours, tarnishing someone’s image and online fraud.

How to avoid deepfake?

If in a video there is no coordination between lip movements and voice, facial expressions appear unusual, blinking of eyes does not appear natural or the quality of the video appears different, then be alert. Instead of immediately accepting such a video as true, please verify it from reliable news sources or the concerned government agency.
