PM Modi and Trump shook hands during G7 summit in France, met for the first time in 16 months
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met on Tuesday during the G7 Summit in Evian, France. This was their first face-to-face conversation since February 2025. The two leaders welcomed each other with a warm handshake and smiles before starting the talks.
The brief meeting took place during an event hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, when leaders from across the world gathered together. In the pictures, Modi and Trump were seen sitting next to each other for the outreach session.
This meeting has taken place at a time when there have been some ups and downs in India-US relations. In recent months, tensions between the two countries had increased due to Operation Sindoor and heavy tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Indian imports.
Formal bilateral talks will be held on Wednesday
Prime Minister Modi and President Trump will hold a formal bilateral meeting on Wednesday at 6:15 pm Indian time. According to White House officials, trade agreements may be discussed in this meeting. Although there is little possibility of any final decision being taken immediately, talks between the two sides on technical issues will move forward.
Earlier on February 2, Trump had announced the India-US trade agreement and reduced the tariff from 25% to 18%. He had also said that India will buy products worth more than 500 billion dollars from America including energy, technology, agriculture, coal.
Global platform seen in G7’s family photo
During the summit, all the leaders stood together for the traditional family photo. In the front row, along with Prime Minister Modi, Trump and Macron, European Council President Antonio Costa, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Brazilian President Lula da Silva were seen.
Before the photo, Macron warmly welcomed PM Modi at the venue of the G7 summit in Evian. This meeting between India and America is also considered important because both the countries want to give a new direction to trade, technology and strategic partnership. This conversation held on a platform like G7 can decide the direction of relations between the two countries in the coming months.
