Right after that ceremony, PM Modi met the President. The importance of this meeting is also because discussions are intensifying in the political circles of the national capital regarding the increasing possibilities of cabinet reshuffle.
Resignation of Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurien
Amidst speculations about cabinet reshuffle, senior BJP leader George Kurien had resigned from the post of Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy today after the end of his Rajya Sabha tenure. The BDP did not make him a candidate again in the recently held Rajya Sabha elections.
Rashtrapati Bhavan later confirmed that President Murmu had accepted his resignation. An official statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said, ‘The President of India, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri George Kurien from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.’
At the same time, BJP has not again nominated Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh, whose Rajya Sabha tenure ended on June 21, for the Upper House. Ravneet Singh, who was a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan since August 2024, is also holding the charge of Minister of State in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
Discussion of reshuffle intensifies due to appointments related to BJP organization
The recent appointments related to the organization in BJP have further intensified the discussion of reshuffle. In this sequence, BJP President Nitin Naveen on May 28 appointed Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra as the President of Delhi BJP. Malhotra will also continue to carry out his ministerial responsibilities, including his role in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
Similarly, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary was appointed president of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit in December last year while he continued to hold his ministerial post. The resignation of the ministers whose parliamentary tenure has ended and the important responsibilities of the organization being handed over to the existing ministers have intensified speculations that changes in the Union Cabinet may be considered. However, the government has not made any official announcement yet.
