PNGRB Clears Rs.7,000 Crore Plan for 1,800-km LPG Pipeline Expansion

New Delhi: The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has authorised nearly 1,800 km of new LPG pipeline infrastructure involving an estimated investment of ₹7,000 crore across six states. The expansion is aimed at strengthening India’s LPG supply chain, improving transportation efficiency and enhancing the resilience of the country’s energy infrastructure.

The three projects will be developed by state-owned GAIL (India) Ltd and will cover Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Goa. The planned routes include a 556-km pipeline from Cherlapally to Nagpur, a 611-km corridor connecting Jhansi with Sitarganj, and a 633-km network linking Shikrapur with Goa and Hubli.

Once completed, the projects will expand India’s PNGRB-authorised common-carrier LPG pipeline network from around 7,700 km to nearly 9,500 km, representing an increase of about 23.5 per cent. The move is expected to reduce dependence on road-based transportation of LPG tankers, while creating a more reliable and efficient mechanism for moving fuel from coastal import points and other supply centres to inland markets.

The investment comes as India continues to rely significantly on imported LPG, with much of the fuel entering through coastal locations before being distributed to consumption centres across the country. Expanding pipeline infrastructure is expected to improve supply security, reduce logistics challenges and support safer movement of LPG over long distances. The initiative is therefore being positioned as an important step towards strengthening India’s long-term energy security.
