Two people died after inhaling poisonous gas while cleaning the society’s sewage treatment plant tanks. The dead included an employee cleaning the tank and a security guard who went in to save him. The incident has sent shockwaves through society and raised serious questions about safety standards.

Shashikant Sharma, a resident of Rajasthan’s Karauli district, was cleaning the STP tank of Aldeco Society. During the cleanup, he collapsed due to toxic gas and lack of oxygen inside the tank. When he did not come out for a long time, the people present at the scene panicked.

The security guards got down in the tank to save Shashikant

Akash, the society’s security guard, descended into the tank without any safety equipment, but he too fainted within minutes from the poisonous gas and lack of oxygen. Both got trapped inside the tank.

Rescue operations were carried out by police and fire brigade

On receiving information about the incident, Knowledge Park Police Station and Fire Brigade reached the spot. Both the people were rescued and rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared them brought dead after examination.

Questions were raised about safety standards

After this accident, questions have been raised about the safety standards followed during cleaning of STP tanks. Locals question whether workers were provided with gas detectors, oxygen cylinders, safety belts, masks and other necessary safety equipment. If not, two people died due to this gross negligence.

The police started investigating

Knowledge Park station in-charge Vinod Kumar said that both the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Police are investigating the entire matter. The primary focus is on determining whether the tank cleaning agency and the society management have followed the safety rules or not. If the investigation reveals negligence at any level, legal action will be taken against those responsible.
