New Delhi. Amid efforts to end the ongoing parliamentary deadlock, political activity has intensified regarding the Delimitation Bill. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Rahul Gandhi held a lengthy meeting on Wednesday. According to sources, the meeting discussed convening a special session of Parliament to discuss the Delimitation Bill. It is reported that the government is considering convening a special session after August 15th.
Preparations underway for special session from August 16 to 18
According to sources, the government may convene a special session between August 16 and 18 to discuss and pass the Delimitation Bill. To this end, the government is in talks with various political parties to build broad consensus on the bill.
To break the ongoing parliamentary deadlock, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has been tasked with communicating with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Union Ministers Prahlad Joshi, Piyush Goyal, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and S. Murugan have been assigned the responsibility of negotiating with other opposition parties. These leaders will hold talks with leaders from various opposition parties.
Preparations to introduce FCRA amendment bill next week
Along with the Delimitation Bill, the government is also preparing to introduce the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, also known as the FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026, in Parliament next week. This bill proposes to amend the existing law relating to foreign contributions.
However, no official announcement has yet been made by the government regarding the date and agenda of the special session. Sources say a formal decision may be made in the coming days.
Congress has already opposed the delimitation bill
The Congress party’s stance on the Delimitation Bill is already clear. At a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party before the monsoon session, the party had decided to oppose the Delimitation Bill if introduced by the government.
What is the Delimitation Bill?
The delimitation proposals relate to the redrawing of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. According to reports, the government intends to reintroduce a bill containing delimitation provisions to provide 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures.
The proposed constitutional amendment would increase the number of members in the Lok Sabha from 543 to 850. Of these, 815 seats are reserved for states and 35 for union territories. The bill proposes to amend Article 81 of the Constitution to advance the bill.
