Prayagraj-Tirunelveli new express, four trips from August
The Railway Ministry has announced to run a new superfast express train between Prayagraj and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. This train, which will run for four trips each in August 2026, will provide better rail connectivity between North and South India to pilgrims, patients, businessmen and students.
Prayagraj: With an aim to strengthen rail connectivity between North India and South India, the Railway Ministry has announced the operation of a new superfast/express train from Prayagraj Junction to Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. This train, which will be operated as a special service in August 2026, will prove to be a big relief for passengers traveling for religious tourism, medical services and business travel.
Religious, medical and business travel will be easy
The new train being launched by the Railway Ministry will cover long distances connecting Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. This train will depart from Prayagraj and reach Tirunelveli stopping at major stations like Manikpur, Satna, Katni, Jabalpur, Itarsi, Nagpur, Vijayawada, Renigunta, Katpadi, Salem and Madurai.
This new service will give travelers from North India the option to directly reach major religious places, commercial cities and prestigious medical institutions in South India. Railways believes that this will make long distance travel more convenient than before.
Better connectivity will be available to Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari and Vellore
Pilgrims will get the biggest benefit of the new train. After reaching Tirunelveli, travelers will be able to easily travel to Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari. After getting down at Madurai station, devotees can also visit the famous Meenakshi Amman temple.
Apart from this, this train is also considered important from the point of view of health services. Katpadi (Vellore) station will provide easy access to renowned medical institutions of the country, such as CMC Vellore and Sankara Nethralaya. The travel is expected to become more convenient with the availability of direct rail facility for patients and their families going for treatment from North India.
From the commercial point of view, this train can prove useful for businessmen, students and employed people by connecting major industrial and business centers like Nagpur, Vijayawada and Salem.
The train will make four trips in August
According to Railways, train number 04171/04172 Prayagraj–Tirunelveli–Prayagraj Express will be operated as a special service in August 2026. This train will make four trips in both directions.
The train from Prayagraj will depart every Saturday at 10:20 am from August 1 to August 22, 2026, and reach Tirunelveli at 1:15 pm on Monday. In return, it will depart from Tirunelveli at 11:30 pm every Monday from 3rd August to 24th August 2026 and reach Prayagraj at 3:30 am on Thursday.
A total of 19 coaches will be installed in the train for the convenience of passengers. These will include 9 sleeper, 2 third AC, 6 general and 2 SLRD coaches. Equipped with modern LHB coaches, this train aims to make long distance travel more safe and comfortable.
Railways hopes that this new service will boost religious tourism, medical travel, trade and cultural exchange between North and South India. Also, passengers of Prayagraj and surrounding districts will get the benefit of direct train facility to Tamil Nadu, which will also reduce the need to change trains frequently.
