Arsenal extended its lead at the top of the Premier League standings to six points after captain Martin Odegaard scored the only goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
The defending champion struggled to break down a disciplined Hull defence before Odegaard struck in the 72nd minute to secure Mikel Arteta’s side its sixth league victory by a single-goal margin this season.
The result took Arsenal to 27 points from 10 matches, six ahead of second-placed Manchester City, which was scheduled to face Nottingham Forest later on Saturday.
Despite dominating possession, Arsenal found it difficult to create clear opportunities against a determined Hull side that remained organised throughout the contest.

However, Odegaard, who had not scored since September, finally broke the deadlock when he reacted quickest to a rebound after Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis had saved Noni Madueke’s effort.
The Norwegian midfielder converted from close range to give Arsenal another narrow victory as it continued its Premier League title defence.
Arteta’s team has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to secure results without producing its best attacking football, and Saturday’s performance was another example of that resilience.
Elsewhere, Fulham and Newcastle United played out a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.
