New Delhi. India’s 15th President Draupadi Murmu is celebrating her 68th birthday today. The life of Draupadi Murmu, born in a poor Santali family in the remote village of Uparbeda in Odisha, is no less than an inspiring story. His journey from school teacher to Rashtrapati Bhavan is an example of indomitable courage and fighting personality. She is the first woman from a tribal community to become President and the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold this highest post of the country. Not only this, she is also the first President to be born in independent India and to assume this responsibility at the age of just 64.
Draupadi Murmu was born on 20 June 1958 in Baidaposi area of Rairangpur district to father Biranchi Narayan Tudu. Both his father and grandfather had been heads of the traditional Gram Panchayat of their village. In her childhood, her family named her Durgi Tudu after her grandmother and fondly called her Puti. Later a school teacher changed her name to Draupadi. After completing her early education from the local school of the village, she went to Bhubaneswar for further education, from where she obtained her graduation degree from Rama Devi Women’s University.
Her family life started after her marriage to Shyam Charan Murmu in 1980 and she became the mother of three children, but fate did not approve of it. Within a span of just seven years, between 2009 and 2015, she lost her husband, both sons, mother and brother. One son died in a road accident and the other under mysterious circumstances. Even after facing such great personal sorrows, he did not let himself break and turned towards spirituality. She joined the Brahma Kumaris movement and dedicated herself completely to social service.
Before entering politics, Draupadi Murmu worked as a clerk in the Irrigation Department of the Government of Odisha and later as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Center in Rairangpur. In 1997, she was elected councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat for the first time and then joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In the year 2000, she reached Odisha Assembly from Rairangpur seat and remained MLA for two consecutive terms. During this period, he held responsibilities ranging from independent charge to ministerial posts in departments like commerce, transport, fisheries and animal resource development in the BJD-BJP coalition government. In 2007, he was selected as the Best MLA of Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Creating history in 2015, she became the first woman Governor of Jharkhand and held the post for six years, the longest tenure in the state so far. During his tenure as Governor, he demonstrated his clear thinking by returning the controversial bills during the sensitive Pathalgadi movement related to tribal land rights. In June 2022, the BJP declared him the NDA’s presidential candidate and in July he registered a historic victory by defeating opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha by a huge margin.
During her tenure as President, Draupadi Murmu has taken many memorable initiatives. In September 2022, she became the first President to inaugurate the Mysore Dussehra festival and in April 2023, she set a new example of courage by flying in a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter plane at Tezpur airbase in Assam. On January 22, 2024, she attended the historic consecration ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya. Another achievement was added to his name when C.P. After Radhakrishnan became the Vice President, she became the first President to serve with three Vice Presidents. Responding to the horrific rape-murder case in Kolkata, he had said, “Enough is enough,” which perfectly reflects his pain and determination for the safety of the country’s daughters.
