EU’s stance on US-Iran agreement
This statement came on June 16, 2026 when the G7 summit was going on in Évian, France. Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the initial peace deal between the US and Iran. But he also made it clear that Europe will lift the sanctions on Iran only when Iran brings real change in its behavior and this will be seen with evidence.
He demanded that the Strait of Hormuz be opened immediately so that there is no problem in the movement of ships. During this time, he also met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan so that relations between Europe and Gulf countries can be further improved.
Iran’s counterattack and Kuwait’s case
On the other hand, Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed displeasure over these statements. Iran accused Europe of showing anger only as per its liking. Iran described the attacks on US military bases in Kuwait as self-defense and said it was a response to US aggression.
Earlier in April 2026 also the European Commission had criticized Iran. At that time, von der Leyen praised the GCC countries for showing restraint and saving the region from a major war. He also said that due to this crisis in the Middle East, fuel prices have increased in Europe, which has affected the common people and the economy.
