President Trump described some countries including India as ‘hell’ and then a few hours later said – India is a ‘great country’
Washington, 23 April. US President Donald Trump, who has gained notoriety for his frequently changing statements, is once again in the headlines. This time, reposting a racist comment by conservative author and radio host Michael Savage, Trump called India, China and other countries ‘hell-like places’. Just a few hours later, he praised India and said – ‘This is a great country, at the head of which I have a very good friend.’
President Trump and ‘a place like hell‘ Controversy
President Trump on Thursday drew attention to a contentious debate over birthright citizenship by sharing a video of conservative commentator Michael Savage. In the clip, Savage alleged that “immigrants take advantage of US laws by coming to the US ‘in their ninth month of pregnancy’, and claimed that ‘a baby born here becomes an instant citizen, and then they move their entire family here from China, India or some other ‘hell-like place’ in the world.”

The video, which was originally from Newsmax’s “The Savage Nation,” spread through an account associated with Trump that reposts his social media activities.
Savage criticized the judicial process
Savage criticized the judicial process, saying, ‘Today’s brief discussion will be about the arguments I just heard in the Supreme Court on the subject of birthright citizenship… All I heard was legal maneuvering.’
Arguing that the issue goes beyond the law, Savage said, ‘This is not really about the law. It’s about public opinion. Highlighting the constitutional limitations, he said, ‘We cannot change the Constitution…’, and also argued that the Constitution was written before the advent of modern realities. Comparing it to previous immigration situations, he claimed that there is now less assimilation of people into society.
“The idea of a ‘melting pot’ is now outdated… We have moved from a ‘melting pot’ to a ‘chamber pot’,” he said, and proposed a nationwide vote on the issue.
MEA of Trump ‘hell hole‘ Refrain from replying directly to posts containing
Meanwhile, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday evening avoided saying anything directly on a controversial post by Donald Trump, in which derogatory language was used about India.
When Jaiswal was asked at the weekly media briefing about Trump’s re-sharing of the letter in which India and other countries were called ‘hellholes’, he gave a brief reply and said, ‘We have seen some reports. That’s all I will say.’
