New Delhi: Ukraine has proposed a temporary ceasefire amid efforts to stop the long-running war between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that there will be no air strikes from Ukraine during the visit of US President Donald Trump’s special envoys to Moscow and Kiev. In return, he has expressed hope of similar action from Russia.
American ambassador will visit Moscow and Kiev
Negotiations on a possible peace agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war appear to be gaining momentum. Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will first go to Moscow and then visit Kiev. Efforts will be made to advance dialogue between the two sides and find ways to end the war.
According to Zelensky, Ukrainian authorities have made necessary preparations for the visit of the American delegation. He said that ensuring the safe travel of the envoys is a priority.
Appeal to Russia to stop attacks
Zelensky clearly said that Ukraine will not conduct air strikes on its own during the visit of American envoys. He has demanded Russia to take similar steps. He says that to create the necessary environment for talks, both sides should stop military activities for some time. The Ukrainian President also indicated that his country wants to negotiate real and practical options to end the war.
The proposal came amid Russia’s latest attacks
This proposal of Ukraine has come at a time when attacks from Russia are continuing. Recently, news of the Ukrainian Intelligence Service headquarters being targeted during the day also came to light. Apart from this, the intensity of Russian air strikes in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities has also been reported to have increased.
In such an environment, how effective Zelensky’s ceasefire proposal will prove to be will now depend on Russia’s response. It is expected that a concrete path towards ending the war will emerge from the talks between American envoys in the coming days.
