New Delhi, 9 October 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with representatives of the Indian team at the WorldSkills Competition, Shanghai 2026 at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. During the interaction, the participants shared their experiences during the competition. He expressed pride in representing his country on the global stage. The participants discussed how to adapt to new tools, software, technical systems and work processes during the international competition. He also talked about the work being done by the government towards skill development which is helping the youth.
The Prime Minister congratulated the participants for representing India on the global stage. He requested him to become the ambassador of skill development. He said that practical skills are as important as academic degrees. Highlighting the importance of specialized skills, the Prime Minister said that as technology rapidly evolves, youth must continuously acquire new skills, upgrade their existing capabilities and adapt to emerging technologies. He urged the participants to develop skills as per the international market requirements and contribute in improving the skill training ecosystem of India through their experiences and suggestions. He stressed the need for concerted efforts by youth, government and training institutions to establish India as a global hub of skilled human resources.
The Prime Minister had underlined the objective behind setting up a separate ministry for skill development and said that the importance of skill training institutes is no less than that of IITs and IIMs. He encouraged the participants to share their experiences and suggestions with the government to help improve India's skills training system. WorldSkills is the world's leading international skills competition, bringing together young professionals from participating countries and regions to showcase excellence in a wide range of vocational and technical skills. WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, the 48th WorldSkills competition, was held from 22 to 27 September 2026 at the Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Centre. Team India secured 10th position in the 48th WorldSkills Competition, Shanghai 2026 by winning 6 silver medals and 20 medals for excellence. India was represented by the largest ever contingent of 70 competitors competing in 63 skills.
