Problems increased in America due to expensive petrol and diesel, many states started trying to provide relief to consumers by giving tax relief.

New Delhi . The effect of the rise in oil prices after the Iran War is also visible in America. The increasing prices of petrol, diesel and gas have increased the pressure on the common people, while the concerns of the state governments have also increased due to expensive fuel. Fuel prices have become an important issue for voters ahead of the midterm elections in November. To provide relief to the people amid rising prices, many states have started temporary reduction in gas tax, tax suspension and relaxation in some rules related to fuel.

Lawmakers in Ohio have approved a 90-day gas tax holiday with bipartisan support. Under this, the state's petrol tax of 38.5 cents and diesel tax of 47 cents per gallon will be suspended. To offset the fuel tax income, the state government will allocate approximately $725 million from the General Fund towards road and bridge maintenance expenses.

On Wednesday, the average price of regular petrol in America was $ 4.43 per gallon. After the start of the Iran war, the price of petrol has increased by about 50 percent. The average price of diesel was $6.41 per gallon, which is just a few cents less than the record level recorded last week. There are 3.785 liters in one gallon.

Apart from Ohio, tax relief has also been given in Georgia after the increase in fuel prices. The tax there was suspended in March as fuel prices rose following the Middle East conflict. Later this arrangement was extended and recently a new motor fuel tax holiday of 30 days was introduced. Fuel tax relief in Indiana has been extended several times and the current relief runs through October 5. Fuel taxes in Utah have been cut by 6 cents per gallon for six months. Illinois and Kentucky have also postponed proposed fuel tax increases.

The rising cost of fuel has also affected the agriculture sector. Temporary changes to diesel tax rules have been made to provide relief to farmers in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas. Tax-free dyed diesel is generally used in off-road machines such as tractors, logging machines and irrigation pumps.

During the harvesting season, some states have temporarily relaxed the rules for its use, so that it can be used in vehicles running on the highway. In California too, the requirement of summer-blend fuel has been relaxed to reduce the price of petrol. In many parts there, summer-blend petrol is required till October 31, but Governor Gavin Newsom abolished this condition on Monday.

The issue of the gas tax holiday in Ohio is also tied to the upcoming gubernatorial election. Democratic candidate Amy Acton last week called for a gas tax holiday. A few hours later, Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy also announced a similar plan. Both candidates are running to replace current Governor Mike DeWine.

  • Democrats accused Ramaswamy of taking credit for Acton's proposal, while his supporters pointed out the differences between the two plans. However, the impact of the tax relief may not be fully visible immediately at the petrol pump. Fuel price depends on many factors like international crude oil price, wholesale price, transportation, stock and local market. At the time of tax removal, retailers may already have fuel purchased after paying tax, so the full effect of the relief may be visible only after new tax-free stock arrives.
