Prosecutors rule out capital punishment
LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors announced Tuesday that they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents, actor and director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.
The couple, ages 78 and 70, were fatally stabbed at their Los Angeles home in December 2025. Nick Reiner, 32, was charged with first-degree murder on Dec. 16, two days after the killings.
He has twice pleaded not guilty, according to The Associated Press.
Special circumstances made Reiner eligible for execution
A grand jury indictment included special-circumstance allegations that Reiner committed multiple murders and killed his parents by lying in wait. Prosecutors also allege that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon—a knife.
Those allegations made Reiner eligible for either capital punishment or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said his office conducted a thorough review before deciding against seeking the death penalty. The process included discussions with members of Rob and Michele Reiner’s families and an evaluation of mitigating factors favoring the defendant.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stresses that the charges are allegations and that Reiner is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Life without parole remains possible
Hochman said life without the possibility of parole will be the maximum punishment available if Reiner is convicted.
California continues to authorize capital punishment, but the state has not executed anyone since 2006. Gov. Gavin Newsom imposed a moratorium on executions in 2019.
Public defender takes over the case
Reiner’s former defense attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case for reasons he described as beyond his control and that of his client. A public defender subsequently assumed responsibility for Reiner’s defense.
After stepping away from the case, Jackson said “pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”
Rob and Michele Reiner honored at the Emmys
Rob Reiner received an emotional tribute during Monday night’s Emmy Awards.
He was awarded a posthumous Emmy at an earlier ceremony for his guest performance on “The Bear.” His friend and co-star Jamie Lee Curtis honored both Reiner and his wife during the televised ceremony.
“He was generous, kind and funny as hell, and a friend to all,” Curtis said Monday. “And we all miss Rob and Michele and all those we lost this year.”
Reiner’s career spanned television and film
Rob Reiner first gained widespread recognition as an actor on the television sitcom “All in the Family.” He played Michael “Meathead” Stivic, the liberal son-in-law of the conservative and bigoted Archie Bunker, portrayed by Carroll O’Connor.
Reiner won two Emmy Awards for the role and later received a posthumous Emmy nomination for his appearance on “The Bear.”
He subsequently became a prolific filmmaker. His directing credits included “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand by Me,” “A Few Good Men” and “When Harry Met Sally…”
Reiner met photographer Michele Singer during the production of “When Harry Met Sally…” The couple married soon afterward and remained together for 36 years.
Father and son collaborated on a film
Nick Reiner was the second of Rob and Michele Reiner’s three children.
He and his father co-wrote the screenplay for the 2015 film “Being Charlie.” The story was based partly on Nick Reiner’s experiences with addiction and homelessness during his teenage years.
