Protest led by Mamata Banerjee against attacks on TMC leaders

Kolkata, 2 June. Trinamool Congress (TMC) president and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday took to the streets in Kolkata to protest against the attacks on party leaders, including her MP nephew Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee.

Before starting the protest at Rani Rashmani Avenue, Banerjee paid homage at the statue of Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar. Banerjee along with party leaders Dola Sen and Kalyan Banerjee offered flowers at Ambedkar’s statue. Banerjee was also seen holding a book on the Constitution of India before leaving for the protest.

This protest is mainly against targeted attacks on its leaders over incidents of post-poll violence and other issues. The protest is taking place amid heightened political tension following alleged attacks on Abhishek Banerjee and party MP Kalyan Banerjee during their tour of affected areas in West Bengal.

Earlier on Monday, Mamata Banerjee had strongly criticized these incidents and called them ‘absurd and dictatorial behaviour’. Attacking the ruling BJP, he had said, ‘The way you attacked the MP of the second largest opposition party is shocking. Doctors were called, yet hospitals were reportedly instructed not to treat. What kind of absurd and dictatorial behavior is this?

Mamta accused BJP of trying to weaken the party. He said, ‘You cannot weaken the party by threatening or bribing some MLAs and MPs. In fact, this will only strengthen the party. The TMC chief also warned that if her party was not allowed to hold protests in Kolkata, she would take the agitation to the national capital.

He had said, ‘If you want, arrest me. TMC will hold its protest on June 2 without police permission, microphone or stage. If we do not get permission to protest in Kolkata, we will protest in Delhi.

Party MP Kalyan Banerjee has also alleged that he had survived an ‘assassination attempt’ near Chanditala police station while submitting deputation. Meanwhile, the police have arrested five people in connection with the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee. The matter is under investigation.
