Sony has increased the price of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) console in India, making the standard disc edition significantly more expensive. The move comes after the company raised PS5 prices across several global markets over the past year amid ongoing memory and storage shortages driven by growing AI demand.
PS5 Standard Edition Gets Major Price Hike
The standard disc edition of the PS5 is now listed on Sony’s official ShopAtSC store at Rs. 69,990, up from its previous price of Rs. 54,990.
This marks a Rs. 15,000 increase, representing a price hike of nearly 28 percent.
The console is currently listed on the official storefront but is out of stock.
Digital Edition Price Yet to Be Confirmed
The PS5 Digital Edition, which does not include a disc drive, is currently not listed on the ShopAtSC website. As a result, its revised price in India has not yet been confirmed.
Previous Price Revision
Sony had earlier increased the price of the PS5 Digital Edition in India in July last year. At that time, the console’s price was revised from Rs. 44,990 to Rs. 49,990, an increase of Rs. 5,000.
The company did not raise the price of the standard PS5 model during that revision.
Global Price Increases Continue
Over the past year, Sony has increased the prices of the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal in several international markets.
In April last year, the company raised PS5 prices in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia, and New Zealand, citing a challenging economic environment.
Earlier this year in March, Sony again increased prices in multiple regions, including the US, the UK, and Japan. In the US, the standard PS5 was priced at $649.99, while the Digital Edition was revised to $599.99. The company attributed the increase to the global economic landscape.
In April, Sony also raised PS5 hardware prices across Southeast Asian markets, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. India was not included in that round of price revisions.
AI Demand Driving Hardware Costs
Gaming and PC hardware prices have risen sharply over the past year due to shortages of RAM and storage components, largely driven by increasing demand for AI-related technologies.
The impact has been seen across gaming PCs, graphics cards, handheld gaming devices, and consoles such as the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Valve also recently launched its Steam Machine PC-console hybrid at $1,049, stating that the pricing reflects the increased cost of components.
