Paris Saint-Germain commenced their UEFA Champions League title defense with a commanding 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava as Matchday 1 unfolded with six fixtures on Wednesday.
PSG’s Ferran Torres marked his Champions League debut for the club with a hat-trick. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring and added a second after Nuno Mendes hit the woodwork. Despite Suleiman Camara’s goal for Slovan, Fabian Ruiz restored PSG’s five-goal lead to complete the comprehensive triumph.
Barcelona also recorded a strong win at Camp Nou, defeating Feyenoord 5–1. Raphinha scored twice, including an early third-minute goal, while Karim Adeyemi and Lamine Yamal, who scored a free-kick, extended the lead. Sem Steijn reduced the deficit for Feyenoord before Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory with a header.
Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield. Marcos Llorente put Atletico ahead with his fifth goal in three appearances at the stadium, but Dominik Szoboszlai equalized before half-time. Alexis Mac Allister secured Liverpool’s comeback in the second half with a powerful strike from outside the area.
Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 win against Napoli away from home. After a goalless first half, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute, finishing a team move with a shot that struck the inside of the post.
Sporting CP recovered from an early own goal by Goncalo Inacio to defeat Galatasaray 3–1 in Lisbon. Geny Catamo equalized, Luis Suarez converted a penalty after the break, and Rodrigo Zalazar sealed the win with a free-kick.
At Stuttgart, Ermedin Demirovic scored a first-half hat-trick to lead the German side to a 3–1 victory over UEFA Champions League debutants Viking. Demirovic opened the scoring, restored the lead with a strike off the underside of the bar, and completed his treble with a volley shortly after the half-hour mark, despite Zlatko Tripic’s equalizer for Viking.
The opening Wednesday fixtures featured numerous goals, with PSG and Barcelona delivering particularly impressive performances at home, while Liverpool and Arsenal demonstrated resilience to secure vital opening wins.
