Punjab Cabinet approves rule amendment to fill seven Election Tehsildar vacancies

The Punjab Cabinet, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, approved an amendment to the Service Rules of the Election Department on June 1 to address administrative bottlenecks and strengthen election preparations ahead of the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections.

The amendment reduces the experience required for promotion from Election Kanungo to Election Tehsildar from 15 years to 12 years. This change aims to fill seven existing vacancies for the post of Election Tehsildar, which are vital to ensuring adequate manpower during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the upcoming elections.

Currently, no serving Election Kanungo meets the 15-year experience criterion for promotion. The amendment will enable eligible officials to be promoted soon and support the smooth conduct of election-related tasks.

In addition, the Cabinet approved the Annual Administrative Report of the Department of Water Resources for 2025-26 during the Council of Ministers meeting chaired by CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. The approval will aid in documenting and reviewing the department’s administrative performance and achievements for the financial year.
