Punjab Congress is not improving, continues to sulk before 2027 elections, fights among themselves

An important strategy meeting of Congress was held amid preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab. This meeting was held at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi in which Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal, Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and many senior leaders of the state were present. In this meeting, once again the internal strife of the party came to the fore. The objective of the meeting was to prepare a strategy for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, but during the discussion, a heated debate and allegations and counter-allegations took place between many leaders. With this, Pratap Singh Bajwa left the meeting midway.

Pratap Singh Bajwa had reportedly left the Congress President’s house after the meeting with Rahul Gandhi. Other leaders of Punjab Congress were still sitting inside but Pratap Singh Bajwa left from there. It is being told that Rahul Gandhi was angry with something he said due to which Pratap Singh Bajwa was reprimanded. After this he left the meeting. However, the party later tried to control the damage.

What did Congress leaders say on Bajwa?

On the question of Pratap Singh Bajwa leaving the meeting, Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel said that the party had called him for the meeting and he left after presenting his views. Along with this, the party has refused any kind of tension. After the controversy escalated, today Prataav Singh Bajwa himself came in front of the media and expressed his views. Bajwa said that the party had called the leaders of Punjab to Delhi.

He says that he was listened to first and after presenting his views, he left from there. Pratap Singh Bajwa said that local body elections will be held in his constituency and because of those elections he had come early from Delhi. On not talking to the media, he said that the meeting was going on and it was not right for me to speak when senior leaders were taking the meeting.

Dispute between Raja Vadig and Channi

According to the report of Indian Express, in this meeting, the past differences between Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warding and former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi came to the fore. It was told that Channi raised the issue of poor performance of Congress in Gidderbaha and asked on what basis the preparations for the assembly elections would be made when the party had to face a crushing defeat in the state president’s own constituency. In the recently held urban body elections, Aam Aadmi Party had registered a big victory, while Congress came second. In Gidderbaha, Aam Aadmi Party had won 17 out of 19 wards, questions were raised about this in the meeting.

According to the report, Vading replied that the ruling party used government machinery in the local body elections, due to which the Congress suffered losses. During this, some other leaders also raised questions that if the government machinery was misused then how did Congress perform better in other areas. The atmosphere in the meeting became quite tense for some time. During the discussion, Vading also raised the issue that Channi remained out of Punjab for a long time during the local body elections and did not play an active role in the campaign. To this Channi replied that he had to go abroad for personal reasons.

There will be no change in Punjab

There were speculations in this meeting that Channi would lobby against Raja Vading and he could be removed from the post of Congress President. However, after the meeting, Bhupesh Baghel clarified that at present there is no plan to change the Punjab Congress leadership. He said that the party will soon prepare a strategy for the upcoming assembly elections and will go among the public and raise issues against the state government. He claimed that Congress will fight the elections unitedly and will go among the people on issues related to corruption, law and order and public interest.

Congress is not learning from mistakes

Congress party has not learned anything from its past mistakes. The party suffered huge losses in the fight between Captain Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Siddu before the 2022 assembly elections. When the party removed the Captain from the post of CM, he left the party. After this, elections were fought under the leadership of Charanjit Singh Channi but the party suffered a crushing defeat. Now again before 2027, factionalism in the party has come to the fore. In such a situation, the party may face a setback again in 2027.
