Iran got the support of this Muslim country on Hormuz toll; The US is a major partner; What will Trump do now?
Qatar Support Iran On Hormuz Toll: Qatar has supported the temporary toll system implemented by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. In the Shangri-La Dialogue, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister said that toll collection for a limited period cannot be called completely wrong. According to him, Iran has to bear huge expenses to maintain security and order in the region, to compensate for which temporary toll can be a practical option. However, he clarified that Qatar does not support any permanent toll system.
Qatar is playing an important role in America-Iran talks
This statement has come at a time when talks are going on between America and Iran regarding the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, Qatar is playing the role of mediator in this conversation. Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani is in constant touch with representatives of both countries and is trying to take the agreement forward.
Iran’s argument behind toll collection
Qatar says that Iran will have to spend heavily in removing the landmines and security structures laid during the war in the Hormuz area. In such a situation, if Iran temporarily collects duty from ships, then it should be seen as its economic compulsion. According to Qatar, the cost of these security measures will have to be met in some way or the other.
Hormuz is very important for the world’s oil supply
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. About 20 percent of the global oil supply passes through this narrow route connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. During the war, Iran had announced to impose transit fee on ships passing through here and had also talked about creating a separate administrative system for this.
There is no mention of toll in the draft agreement
America is continuously opposing this toll system and is calling it against international maritime rules. There is no mention of Hormuz toll even in the proposal for the agreement being prepared between the two countries. According to reports, the proposal includes relief from some economic sanctions imposed on Iran and conditions on issues related to its nuclear program, but toll collection is not recognized.
