Young Indian chess Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has won the St. Louis Rapid & Blitz 2026 title with a brilliant performance. He secured the title with one round remaining. This victory is being considered a major achievement for the 20-year-old, and with this win, Praggnanandhaa has once again raised the flag of victory across the world.
The tournament spanned five days, and Praggnanandhaa was in a strong position from the start. He consistently maintained his lead and, even before the final round, secured the title. In the race for the title, he faced a strong challenge from Uzbekistan’s Grandmaster, Javokhir Sindarov. Javokhir Sindarov gave Praggnanandhaa a tough fight throughout the tournament and finished second.

The tournament reached a very interesting point. In the round before the final, Praggnanandhaa faced Javokhir Sindarov, and the match ended in a draw. With this result, Praggnanandhaa’s lead increased to such a level that he secured the title with one round remaining. Sindarov gave him a tough fight throughout the tournament, but he finished 1.5 points behind and finished in second place.
Pragnanandhaa had previously performed brilliantly in the rapid rounds. He led with 12 points after nine rapid rounds. He lost to Jordan van Foreest in the final round, but despite this defeat, his lead remained intact. Praggnanandhaa maintained his lead in the blitz rounds as well. These points have propelled him to second place in the 2026 overall Grand Chess Tour rankings, behind American Fabiano Caruana. Following this victory, Praggnanandhaa will now be eyeing his next major tournament, the Sinquefield Cup, which begins on August 10th.
