Rage over Women’s Reservation Bill, Smriti Irani targeted the opposition, said- women were cheated
digital desk- The rhetoric in the country’s politics regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill has intensified. On Saturday, former Union Minister Smriti Irani launched a scathing attack on the Congress and its allies, calling them against women’s rights. He alleged that the opposition was celebrating after the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill giving 33 per cent reservation to women in Parliament, which was a “betrayal of women”. Smriti Irani said that it is unfortunate to stop the rights of women who have struggled in politics for years. He alleged that Congress and its allies were celebrating the fact that women did not get their rights. He said, “The women of the country will never forgive those who were clapping and laughing in Parliament yesterday.
298 were in favor, while 230 MPs opposed it.
In fact, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill could not be passed in the Lok Sabha on Friday due to lack of two-thirds majority. 298 votes were cast in favor of this bill, while 230 MPs opposed it. A total of 528 MPs had voted, but the government could not cross the required threshold of 352 votes, causing the bill to fall. Smriti Irani accused Congress of taking credit for its 98-year-old “claim” of women empowerment but failing to implement it on the ground. He said that the recent incident in Parliament has exposed the real intentions of the opposition. He also targeted Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying that she has been against 33 percent reservation for women and is now trying to take credit for her historical contribution. Smriti Irani alleged that the Gandhi-Nehru family does not want the common and poor women of the country to move forward in politics and participate in power.
If the opposition wants to protect the interests of women then it should support the government.
He also said that if the opposition really wanted to protect the interests of southern states and women, it should have supported the government’s proposal. He raised the question that when it came to giving more representation to women by increasing the seats in the Lok Sabha, why the opposition did not accept it. Smriti Irani claimed that the government aims to give political participation to women, while at the same time maintaining a balance with male representation. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried to increase the participation of women through this proposal, but the opposition changed the direction of politics by stopping it. He also said that the issue is not just about a law, but about the respect of women and their political rights. According to Smriti Irani, the role of the opposition has proved that it is not in favor of giving equal opportunity to women in power.
