The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his 'Insaaf Rally' in Sangrur, accusing him of failing to present a vision or roadmap for Punjab's future and focusing instead on attacking Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the AAP government.
AAP Punjab President Aman Arora also questioned Rahul Gandhi's silence on the alleged assault and casteist abuse of senior Dalit Congress leader Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra inside Congress Bhawan, saying it exposed the Congress leadership's attitude towards Dalit dignity.
In a statement, the AAP alleged that Tarkhan Majra had been assaulted and subjected to casteist remarks by former Punjab Youth Congress president Barinder Singh Dhillon, who is said by the party to be close to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. The party said Rahul Gandhi did not address the incident despite holding an 'Insaaf Rally' in Punjab.
During a media interaction, Arora said, “Rahul Gandhi spoke at length during his visit to Punjab, but did not utter a single word about the senior Dalit leader who was beaten inside Congress Bhawan and subjected to casteist slurs. If a senior Dalit leader can face such treatment inside the Congress party's own headquarters, it raises serious questions about the party's attitude towards Dalit dignity. Rahul Gandhi's silence on this incident exposes the mindset of the Congress leadership.”
Arora also questioned why Rahul Gandhi had not presented concrete proposals on Punjab's development and the challenges facing the state. “What will Punjab gain by coming here and abusing the AAP, our government and CM Bhagwant Singh Mann? Will Punjab's problems be resolved merely by hurling abuses? Rahul Gandhi should have spoken about Punjab's future, the challenges facing its people and the vision his party has for the state. Instead, he chose not to address the issues that demanded answers, including the injustice faced by a senior Dalit leader inside his own party's office,” he said.
The AAP further accused Congress of declining political relevance, citing repeated electoral setbacks and its inability to offer a credible alternative or constructive agenda in Punjab. The party claimed that its government had fulfilled its five guarantees in five years and was working towards its commitments to the people.
The AAP said Punjab's people expected political parties to present a clear development agenda and demonstrate their commitment to social justice, adding that the Congress rally had failed to meet those expectations.
