Rahul Gandhi Dharna: Demand FIR on pellet gun, Priyanka also joins dharna

New Delhi: The case of alleged use of pellet guns during the student agitation in Delhi is again taking political heat. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi reached the Parliament Marg police station on Friday along with student Sahil Lochab who was injured by a pellet gun. Rahul Gandhi met the police officials and later sat on dharna outside the police station demanding registration of an FIR based on the victim’s complaint. After some time, many senior Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi also joined the dharna.

Here he raised the issue of action taken during the July 20 student protest before the Delhi Police officials. Rahul Gandhi questioned why an FIR has not been registered yet regarding the use of pellet guns and how far the investigation into the entire case has reached.

Rahul Gandhi reached DCP office to meet Delhi Police Joint CP Nupur Prasad. He carried some grievances with him and demanded action on them. As no immediate decision was announced by the police, Rahul Gandhi came out and sat on the dharna.

After Rahul Gandhi’s dharna, several Congress leaders reached the Parliament Road Police Station. Priyanka Gandhi also sat on dharna with Rahul Gandhi. According to reports, Congress leaders including Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Salman Khurshid, Jairam Ramesh have also reached the spot.

Meanwhile, heavy activity was seen outside the police station due to the presence of media, security personnel and Congress leaders-activists.

The Congress alleged that the FIR was not registered despite the complaint of the aggrieved student. On the other hand, the police say that the complaint has been accepted and the crime branch is investigating the entire matter. It has also been stated by the police that the Supreme Court has constituted a High Powered Committee to investigate the incident and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the committee.

On 20 July, a protest march was held from Jantar-Mantar towards Parliament under the leadership of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Meanwhile, there was a clash between the demonstrators and the police. The protesters alleged excessive use of force, including pellet guns, by the police and the Rapid Action Force.

According to media reports, an internal investigation by the CRPF revealed that seven rounds were fired from a pellet gun by an RAF jawan. According to reports, three people including student Sahil Lochab were injured in the incident.

The Supreme Court also formed an inquiry committee

After the matter reached the Supreme Court, the court ordered the formation of a five-member High Powered Inquiry Committee. The committee will also look into allegations of excessive force and use of pellet guns by the police, as well as allegations of violence against policemen by protesters. So the investigation will not be limited to the police action only, but the role of both the parties will be investigated.
