Rahul, Priyanka detained during protest against Election Commission – Read

NEW DELHI:

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained along with other Opposition leaders during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the national capital on Tuesday.

The INDIA bloc protest was organised near the Election Commission headquarters over allegations relating to voter-list revision and demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of acting in favour of the BJP-led government, a charge rejected by the poll panel and the BJP.

The protest took an unusual turn when Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi entered Akashvani Bhavan after police began detaining Opposition leaders outside the Election Commission. Several MPs subsequently joined them in a sit-in.

The two Congress leaders and other protesters were later detained and released. The episode has intensified the political confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
