Rain became deadly in NCR, death of 10 people in two days exposed negligence of the system

New Delhi:While heavy monsoon rains in the National Capital Region (NCR) brought relief to people from the heat, waterlogging and lack of security arrangements at many places proved fatal. In the last two days, 10 people died in separate accidents in many areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Faridabad and Sonipat, while a child was seriously injured. These incidents have raised serious questions on administrative preparedness and infrastructure during the rainy season.

Tragic incident happened in Noida

The most painful incident came to light in Sector-58 area of Noida, where Aryan, a young engineer working in a private company, died under suspicious circumstances. It is being told that due to waterlogging, he was passing through the slab built on the drain. Meanwhile, fearing electric shock from a nearby electric pole, he lost his balance and fell into the drain. The family members have blamed the negligence of the local authority and the electricity department for this incident. Police have registered the case and started investigation.

Child’s body found in pit

The body of a six-year-old child was recovered from a deep pit filled with rain water in Loni area of Ghaziabad. A person was found dead in a waterlogged pit near the railway line in Hapur. In Ballabhgarh, Faridabad, an eight-year-old student, who had gone to take bath in a field filled with rain water, drowned, whose condition is critical.

Man dies by drowning in rain

On the other hand, in Sonipat, a young man drowned due to rain water filling the pit dug for the construction of foot overbridge on National Highway-44. In this matter, the police have registered a case of negligence against the project manager of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is alleged that adequate barricading and warning signs were not installed at the construction site.

After these incidents, questions have started being raised on the preparations and security arrangements of the administration. Local people say that many accidents could have been prevented if drainage, open drains, pits and safety of electric poles had been ensured before the rains. At present, investigation into various cases is going on and answers are being sought from the concerned agencies.
